Besides popular hiking trails in the immediate vicinity on the Kreuzberg, the entire region around the Rax and Schneeberg as well as the Semmering, Hohe Wand and Bucklige Welt also make for attractive areas to explore.
A feature of outstanding cultural and historical significance is the Semmering railway, built in 1854. It is Europe’s oldest mountain railway and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998.
For day trips to nearby towns, Wiener Neustadt and Baden are easy to reach, as are Graz, the capital city of Styria and Austrian’s capital, Vienna. All can be reached by train from Payerbach railway station or by car.
Burgenland with Lake Neusiedl, Europe’s largest endorheic lake, is also worth a day trip.
